The National Retail Federation reported that shoppers spent an average of 4% less over the holiday weekend, the first decline in spending since 2009 when the recession cut deeply into spending.
Industry analyst ShopperTrak reported a modest 2.3% increase in spending on Thursday and Friday. But it said that spending at brick and mortar stores on Black Friday fell sharply compared to a year ago, as the consumers took advantage of Thanksgiving day openings.
"It's spreading the jam a bit thinner over a larger piece of bread," said Bill Martin, president of ShopperTrak, about the impact of the extra day of shopping.

The purchase of Harris Teeter is part of Kroger�� strategy to fend off rival discounters, such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT), Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) and Target Corp (TGT). The firm intends to lower prices on items such as bread and milk, in order to attract more customers to the high-end products Harris Teeter has to offer. Thus, it will seek to drive traffic to its stores by using food as a loss leader, much the same way rivals operate. Reduced margins are expected, yet Kroger is still the best positioned traditional grocer to deal with the competition arising from non-traditional grocers. The firm�� 2,400 stores and $100 billion in annual sales, generate a scale which enables it to leverage fixed costs and thus compete with large rivals.

Competition: While TJX attempts to undercut more traditional retailers, it has plenty of competition in the deep-discount game, Ross Stores (ROST), Kohl’s (KSS) and Burlington Stores (BURL). TJX also must contend with big-box operators like Target (TGT). So far, TJX has been able to dig itself a niche and remain fairly differentiated, but it’s fair to point out the danger in slipping — in retail, customers always have plenty of alternatives.

The fiscal Q3 2014 earnings report for auto parts retailer stock AutoZone, Inc (NYSE: AZO), a peer of Advance Auto Parts, Inc (NYSE: AAP), O'Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ: ORLY) and The Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY), is scheduled for before the market opens on Tuesday. Aside from the AutoZone earnings report, it should be said that Advance Auto Parts, Inc reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 15th (results were better than expected and they upped guidance); O'Reilly Automotive Inc reported Q1 2014 earnings on April 24th (results topped expectations); and The Pep Boys reported Q4 2013 earnings on April 15th and will report Q1 2014 earnings on June 10th (PBY reported a surprise loss as tire pricing negatively hit revenue). However and given the current uncertain economy that is keeping most consumers in their old cars, you would think that auto parts retailers in general would all be doing well.

It’s time for investors to downshift their expectations on O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY).
Bloomberg NewsHeading into last night’s earnings report, O’Reilly had returned 50% this year including reinvested dividends, easily besting peers Autozone (AZO), which had returned 22%, Genuine Parts (GPC), which has returned 26%, and Advance Auto Parts (AAP), which had returned 38%,� thanks in large part to a 25% gain in the last month due to its purchase of General Parts International. Clearly, investors thought O’Reilly had something going for it its competitors did not.
They were wrong. O’Reilly beat earnings estimates by two penny’s but that included as much as a 9 cent gain thanks to its tax rate, while its same-store sales came in at 4.6%, below consensus of 5.4%. As a result, O’Reilly’s shares have plunged 7% to $124.93 today at 2:42 p.m.
JPMorgan’s Christopher Horvers and team say investors should have seen this coming:
Despite AZO and AAP both missing same-store-sales forecasts recently and GPC calling out significant weakness in DIY, the market had seemingly absolved ORLY of any complicity and drove the stock to near a 52-week high into the print. Clearly the company�� performance vs. peers over the past year supported that view but the recent widespread weakness in consumer spending and peer commentary suggested that this time could be different. Also, like our preview on GNC, ORLY drew a ��hort straw��given that they report early in the retail season…
…the stock level and premium valuation vs. peers (4-7 P/E turns higher than AAP and AZO) suggest that the pressure on the stock is likely to be greater than the 3% miss against Street operating income estimates.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc.'s(ORLY) fourth-quarter net grew 15%, as the auto-parts retailer reported higher same-store sales.
Plains All American Pipeline LP(PAA) said its fourth-quarter earnings fell 13%, hurt by weaker adjusted results at its supply-and-logistics business.
