Hot Railroad Stocks To Own For 2014

Railroad organization CSX's (CSX) performance has been inconsistent. One of the reasons behind its sluggish performance this year was a powerless final quarter earnings report that was released in mid-January. CSX had missed profit estimates because of powerless coal shipments, and its shares slipped the most in more than two years.

Positive expectations

CSX expects positive and ideal conditions in most of its markets this year, determined by the merchandise, industrial, housing, and construction sectors in terms of volume and margins. The merchandise sector, which includes the agribusiness sector as well, had witnessed significant development in volumes last year and the same pattern is relied upon to proceed with this year as well. Increases in grain and ethanol shipments have boosted the merchandise segment so far and a similar pattern is normal going ahead.

Extending limit

Also, CSX is redesigning Murphy-Brown's Rose Hill food factory to a 90-auto collector of unit trains and has effectively changed over most of its Prestage Farms office to 90-auto units. These upgrades will help CSX to better oversee volumes and lessen lead times to customers. CSX now has a sum of 24 food and fare facilities spotted on its system or a joining short line that can get 90-auto trains. The essential point of these facilities is to load a whole 90-auto unit prepare inside 15 hours.

GasJack unit fleet

The Company GasJack unit allows it to perform compression, liquids separation and optional gas metering services all from one skid. The Company focuses on the natural gas wells in its operating regions that produce between 30,000 and 300, 000 cubic feet of natural gas per day (Mcf/d) and less than 50 barrels of water per day. The Company primarily utilize its natural gas powered GasJack compressors, or GasJack units, to provide wellhead compression services. Its GasJack units increase gas production by reducing surface pressure, which allows wellbore fluids that would normally block gas flow to produce up the well. The 46-horsepower GasJack unit is an integrated power/compressor unit equipped with an industrial 460-cubic inch, V-8 engine that uses natural gas from the well to power one bank of cylinders that, in turn, powers the other bank of cylinders, which provide compression. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had a fleet of 3,145 GasJack units.!

VJack unit fleet

The Company utilizes its electric VJack compressors, or VJack units, to provide its production enhancement services on wells located in larger, mature oil fields, such as the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico, and in environmentally sensitive markets, such as California, when electric power is available at the production site. Its VJack unit is designed for vapor recovery applications (to capture natural gas vapors emitting from closed storage tanks after production and to reduce storage tank pressures) and backside pumping applications on oil wells (to reduce pressures caused by casing head gas in oil wells with pumping units). Based on GasJack unit technology, the VJack unit is capable of full wellbore stream production, and can handle up to 50 barrels per day of liquids on a standard skid package. As of December 31, 2011, it had a fleet of 50 VJack units. Its GasJack and VJack compressor units are mounted on steel skids.

ePumper system

Utilizing its ePumper system, SCADA satellite telemetry-based reporting system, it remotely monitor in real time, whether its services are being continuously provided at each well site. The ePumper system improves the response time of its field personnel.

Well Monitoring and Automated Sand Separation Services

The Company also provides ongoing well monitoring services and, in Mexico, automated sand separation services. Its well monitoring services consist of ongoing testing and evaluation of wells to determine how its wellhead compression services are optimizing the production from a well.

5 Best Gas Stocks To Own For 2014

Liquids-focused driller Gulfport Energy (NASDAQ: GPOR  ) is a very interesting energy company. Unlike most North American production companies, Gulfport doesn't produce a lot of natural gas. In fact, last year 93% of its production was oil and NGLs, which provide the company with high-margin cash flow. Investors are starting to take notice and the stock has more than doubled over the past year. However, I see three very compelling reasons to own Gulfport.

Very oily production
As I mentioned, 93% of Gulfport's production last year consisted of oil and NGLs. That's very impressive when you consider that most producers would love it if just half of their production were liquids. For perspective, despite investing heavily to grow its liquids production,74% of Chesapeake Energy's (NYSE: CHK  ) production is still natural gas. Even Devon Energy's (NYSE: DVN  ) natural gas production is still more than half at 59% despite double-digit oil production growth.

Top 10 Gas Stocks To Buy For 2014

Investment conferences over the past several years predictably feature speakers waxing about the shale oil revolution as the biggest, if not only, bright spot in an economic landscape darkened by an economic “recovery” that never seems to gain its footing.

So on cue, Michael Underhill of Capital Innovations made sure the rollout of his new energy infrastructure fund would coincide with this week’s Morningstar Investment Conference.

Underhill’s message: the surge in oil and gas production that has fostered predictions of U.S. energy independence by 2030 is bigger than you think; indeed, some sources are now forecasting achievement of energy independence as early as 2018-'19.

“An estimated $641 billion worth of energy infrastructure assets will be built over the next 22 years,” he tells ThinkAdvisor in an interview.

His Vertical Capital Innovations MLP Energy Fund (VMLPX) aims to claim a piece of that growth by investing in midstream master limited partnerships involved in the gathering, processing, storing, transporting and marketing of natural gas, natural gas liquids and crude oil.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lee Jackson]

New Source Energy Partner L.P. (NYSE: NSLP) is definitely a name for investors interested in yield. While the company faced some issues in the second quarter due to flooding in some of its drilling areas, production is back to normal and management is very positive for the remainder of 2013. Oppenheimer has a $23 price objective, while the consensus is at $24. Investors are paid a stellar 11% distribution.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

New Source Energy Partners (NYSE: NSLP) debuted in February 2013 as the year’s first initial public offering of an upstream master limited partnership, with an initial enterprise value (EV) of $186 million. The partnership is engaged in the development and production of liquids-rich conventional resource reservoirs in east-central Oklahoma.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. The reason for the disconnect between earnings and stock performance has to do with the changing fundamentals for shipping overall. For years, shipping companies both on the dry-bulk and the tanker side of the industry have suffered from weakness in the global economy after having built huge numbers of new ships during better times. That forced Overseas Shipholding Group to seek bankruptcy protection late last year and has left tanker giant Frontline (NYSE: FRO  ) under considerable financial pressure as it continues to labor under a substantial debt load.

Finally, Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR  ) has lost a quarter of its value after disclosing in an SEC filing yesterday that it dismissed PricewaterhouseCoopers as its accounting firm. According to the filing, PricewaterhouseCoopers had identified several issues with the energy company, including certain deficiencies in internal controls. Magnum Hunter offered a remediation plan to address PwC's concerns, but it nevertheless replaced PwC with an accounting firm called BDO USA. Investors have grown accustomed to selling at the first hint of accounting issues, and that's clearly the case with Magnum Hunter today.

Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR  )
Topping the list with a five-year compound annual growth rate of 220% is Magnum Hunter Resources. First, I will point out that the company started at a very low base as its market cap was just $10 million as its share price bottomed out at $0.37 in 2009, when its current management team assumed leadership. However, that team has led the company to phenomenal growth in cash from operations since taking over.

    Who's next?
Kodiak Oil & Gas isn't the only one that has employed this growth strategy in the Bakken, and several other companies that are either Bakken-centric or have smaller assets in the region will also struggle with these new regulations. The companies that immediately come to mind are Oasis Petroleum and Triangle Petroleum because they are pure plays, but two other companies that could be at risk here are Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) and Magnum Hunter Resources (NYSE: MHR  ) . While Magnum Hunter and Halcon do have assets elsewhere, they have both been using the Bakken as a production base to generate revenue while they explore less established shale formations. Based on the cash flow at these companies, they can ill afford to see production limited in the Bakken.

Some, like Cheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) , whose Sabine Pass terminal was the first LNG export venture to receive federal approval, are looking to export the stuff.

Others are using it right here in the U.S. to power trucks and other vehicles. Waste Management (NYSE: WM  ) , for instance, has amassed a sizable fleet consisting of 2,000 trucks powered by compressed natural gas, or CNG. It even recently opened a new CNG fueling station in Bristol, Pa., to help fuel its growing fleet, as well as to provide fueling options for the public.

Along with LNG exporters and companies with large trucking fleets, other companies are also finding innovative ways of tapping the plentiful supply of U.S. natural gas. Let's take a closer look at three of them.

Halliburton
First up is oilfield services company Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) , which recently revealed how it's using natural gas to fuel some of its vehicles. In a YouTube video, the company announced the addition of nearly 100 new light-duty trucks that can run on compressed natural gas.

x86: With regards to the specific x86 server business, it seems that IBM is considering the possibility of fully divesting it. According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Finally, IBM has a history of aggressive shifts to areas with better growth prospects and margins. For example, the company agreed to sell off the PC business to Lenovo (LNVGF.PK) at a moment where the PC still seemed attractive.

In fact, today the company announced that it will be launching a new universal life product for the Canadian market called Manulife UL by May 26 of this year. The new product will offer cost-effective insurance protection, as well as the opportunity for tax-advantaged investing, catering to customer demands for a more simplified insurance solution, which should help boost sales to some extent. Although the firm balance sheet is highly leveraged, exposing it to possible damages in the case of higher-than-expected policy liabilities, Manulife capital position has improved substantially over the past year. With a ratio of regulatory capital to capital required at 248%, the firm possesses excessive capital levels, well above competitors like Prudential Public Limited Company (ADR) (PUK), China Life Insurance Company Ltd. Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. Weatherford International (NYSE: WFT  ) is going through an identity crisis of sorts that I'm surprised hasn't raised some legal red flags or caused more concern on Wall Street. The company maintains its main operational office in Houston, was formerly legally based in Bermuda, moved to Switzerland in 2009, and now seeks the greener pastures of Ireland to operate at lower costs and further attract top talent. What's going on here? Is Weatherford gaming the system, oris itpossibly hiding something? One thing's for sure, this is perfectly legal but something sure doesn't smell right since tax shelters are increasingly being vilified in political circles here in theUnited States. Ireland has also been under pressure to makeits tax structures harder to abuse by multinational corporations.

Despite the poor operating performance, things are looking up for Weatherford (WFT) that why the selling at the start of the year is so perplexing and likely to attract a private equity or hedge fund manager. Analysts expect profits to grow by 58% next year. At current prices, the stock trades for only 11.5 times 2014 estimated earnings. That about as cheap as it gets. An astute big boy manager is going to exploit that valuation metric in very short order. I get in before they do.

The last time a Dow shake-up caused such a stir was in April 2004, when AT&T (NYSE: T), Eastman Kodak (currently in bankruptcy proceedings), and International Paper Co. (NYSE: IP) were removed and replaced with American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG), Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ).

The increased demand is bad for homebuilders, but it's also bad for paper companies. They could at least use the beetle-bored wood that homebuilders don't want, since it would just be ground to pulp and bleached anyway. But with power companies buying up even wasted sawdust, International Paper (NYSE: IP  ) , one of the largest paper companies, has seen its margins compressed, as some operational improvements have been offset by lower sales prices and higher input costs.

The U.S. Postal Service is engaged in a well-publicized battle for survival in this era of digitization. With the closure of its paper mill in Courtland, Alabama, International Paper (IP) has further underlined the inexorable drive of digitization. On September 11, 2013, IP announced the following:

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.
