Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2014

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Short-sellers hate being caught short a stock that reports a blowout quarter. When this happens, we often see a tradable short squeeze develop as the bears rush to cover their positions to avoid big losses. Even the best short-sellers know that it's never a great idea to stay short once a bullish earnings report sparks a big short-covering rally.

This is why I scan the market for heavily shorted stocks that are about to report earnings. You only need to find a few of these stocks in a year to help enhance your portfolio returns -- the gains become so outsized in such a short time frame that your profits add up quickly.

That said, let's not forget that stocks are heavily shorted for a reason, so you have to use trading discipline and sound money management when playing earnings short-squeeze candidates. It's important that you don't go betting the farm on these plays and that you manage your risk accordingly. Sometimes the best play is to wait for the stock to break out following the report before you jump in to profit off a short squeeze. This way, you're letting the trend emerge after the market has digested all of the news.

Shares of Hertz Global (HTZ) have popped this morning after the company took steps to protect itself from those pesky activist investors.

    Bloomberg

Unlike other companies that have been targeted by activists–we’re looking at you Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF)–this has been a very good year for Hertz Global and its competitor Avis Budget Group (CAR). Hertz is up 73%, while Avis has more than doubled. So MKM Partners’ Christopher Agnew and Bradford Dalinka can see the logic in the “poison pill:”

In general we are not fans of shareholder rights plans, however, we understand HTZ’s Board wanting to implement this plan: (1) It is a standard short-term (one-year) plan and therefore relatively shareholder friendly. (2) 2014, in our view, will be a big year for car rental and HTZ in particular with a stronger economy compounding the benefits of industry consolidation as HTZ fully integrates Dollar Thrifty. We also anticipate the likely strategic action of a HERC spin-off or sale which in turn we believe will be a catalyst for initiating and accelerating returning cash to shareholders. We can understand why the Board would like time to execute on the strategic plan it has outlined. (3) We think this news will attract increased interest in the HTZ story with the risk that it also could increase volatility.

Shares of Hertz Global have gained 8.1% to $28.02 today at 11:06 a.m., while Avis Budget Group has risen 2.4% to $40.44.

Shares of Hertz (HTZ) are tumbling today after the rental-car company release so much bad news it’s hard know where to begin.

Hertz withdrew its financial forecasts, citing higher audit expenses; it said the sale of its equipment-rental business could be postponed well into next year; and that higher demand was offset by too few cars thanks to recalls at General Motors and others. And that’s just some of the issues.

JPMorgan’s Kevin Milota throws in the towel on Hertz…

We are downgrading our rating on Hertz to Neutral from Overweight following the company 8-K filing last night. The filing contained a bundle of bad news that we believe will be the point of capitulation for many of the frustrated bulls who have been extremely patient withHertz until this point (as it has yet to print 1Q & 2Q results due to its financial statement review that began in May 2014). In the 8-KHertz announced 1) it is withdrawing its 2014 guidance (and will be well below the low end of its previous guidance); 2) 2Q14 headline results were lackluster with revenues coming in below our/Street estimates; 3) its Rental Car Group President and Lead Independent Director retired; and 4) it potentially delayed the spin of its equipment rental business past 1Q15 (a major catalyst for investors looking for the rental car business recapitalization). We, and believe many of the bulls, have lower confidence in Hertz ability to manage through the accounting/financial statement review while concurrently participating in the rental car operating fundamental upswing that its primary competitorAvis Budget has seen to date.

…as does Deutsche Bank’s Chris Woronka andCarlo Santarelli.

Net-net, it’s difficult to find any positives in the report. Collectively, we view the data points as a major fracture point in the Hertz bull case, particularly on the operations side….Many issues appear to be Hertz-s

Small cap marijuana stocks Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS), Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX), Growlife Inc (OTCBB: PHOT) and HEMP, Inc (OTCMKTS: HEMP) were all surging by double digits yesterday thanks in part to legal sales of pot beginning in Colorado.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

But, as the Huffington Post points out, most of the companies that stand to benefit are very small–they make micro caps look big–trade over the counter–good bye liquidity. That includes transaction-processing company MediSwipe (MWIPD), GreenGro Technologies (GRNH) Medbox (MDBX), which makes dispenser for high-risk drugs, and GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPRF).

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

The last few days have been nothing less than incredible for stocks like Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), and Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA). MJNA shares have jumped 90% since last Friday. PHOT is up 51% for the same timeframe. CBIS has grown 150%, while MDBX is up 112%. The reason? It's largely the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado - a law that went into effect as of January 1st. The legalization of medical marijuana in Illinois on the same day didn't hurt either. And truth be told, the event-based rally from the likes of Medbox and Cannabis Science makes basic sense - it's a landmark shift in the way this country views and treats marijuana. On the flipside, before wading any deeper into stocks like Medical Marijuana or Growlife, current and would-be owners might want to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

  • [By John Udovich]

The SEC has halted trading of small cap marijuana stock Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) after a relatively brief trading halt forAdvanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc (OTCMKTS: CANN), but Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) are still very much alive. However and as I have noted (repeatedly)in the past (see here), Medical Marijuana Inc has aformer CEO who has been indicted for a multi-state mortgage fraud scam/ponzi scheme while Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX) is another marijuana stock with some ssuesthat were summed up nicely in a Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation article cleverly entitled: Tinkerer, Lawyer, Hustler, Lies: One Man Path to a Dope Fortune. Obviously, investing in marijuana stocks is not for conservative. Nevertheless, there isstill plenty of good or bad news for investors in the marijuana sector to inhale, including the following:

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Another source of potential problems is the titanium dioxide market. DuPont has made substantial investments in boosting TiO2 production based on the extremely high demand seen a couple of years ago, but buyers stockpiled substantial amounts of the chemical in order to avoid paying ever-higher prices. DuPont joined competitors Huntsman (NYSE: HUN  ) and Tronox (NYSE: TROX  ) in implementing TiO2 price increases, with DuPont's effective July 1, but the question remains whether the paint makers that need the chemical will keep buying or continue to seek cheaper substitutes.

  • [By Neha Chamaria]

On the same day that DuPont declared its intentions, Tronox (NYSE: TROX  ) , another big TiO2 producer, chipped in with a similar announcement to increase prices effective June 1. These two were among the only major TiO2 companies that were left to jump on the price-hike bandwagon. Others, like Huntsman (NYSE: HUN  ) and Kronos Worldwide, already took the plunge some weeks back.

spaxiax/Shutterstock Loans are inevitable for most adults. If you buy a house or car, use a credit card or go to college, you'll likely need to take out a loan. U.S. household debt stands at $11.7 trillion, according to a recent Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey that draws on information from 40 million individuals. But taking out a loan doesn't always work out well, as anyone who has dealt with a debt collector can attest. So what mistakes are you most likely to make in the loan process? A good rule of thumb: If there's a chance your loan can destroy your marriage, business or send you into bankruptcy, you're about to make the biggest mistake of all: taking out the loan in the first place. 1. Not Reading the Fine Print There are always important gems of information buried in all that legalese, so you owe it to yourself to take a good look at what you're signing up for, says Leslie Tayne, a financial attorney and debt specialist who runs the Tayne Law Group in New York City. "Many people have a tendency to simply sign the dotted line, listening to the salesperson and not double-checking the agreement," Tayne says. "I see this all the time. A client will come in and tell me that they didn't know about something in the loan, such as a balloon payment or increase in interest rate." But if you sign the contract, you're telling the lender that you do know –- even if you don't -– which, of course, is the problem. 2. Taking Out a Loan for Someone Else Co-signing is a mistake, but some people double that error by taking out a loan and giving the money to someone else. "You'd be surprised at how often this happens," says Michael Poulos, CEO of Michigan First Credit Union in Lathrup Village, Michigan. He says his staff has, on occasion, encountered loan scenarios such as parents coming in to borrow money for their children and customers needing money to bail out family members from jail. One of the more interesting cautionary tales about borr
